A solid additive for use in a heat transfer fluid comprising a carbon compound grafted with at least one hydrophilic functional group, the hydrophilic functional group being derived from a plant extract comprising at least one free radical-generating compound, wherein the carbon compound has a specific surface area of substantially 100 to 780 m2/g.
