The invention describes the development and application of electronic nose for halal authentication. The method was developed for rapid detection and differentiation (within 15 seconds) of pork from other types of meats such as a beef, mutton and chicken meat. This is achieved using a visual odor pattern called VaporPrint, derived from the frequency of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) detector. Achemometric method, particularly principal component analysis (PCA), was used for the data processing and interpretation. Analysis by PCA was able to cluster and discriminate pork from types of meats. The PCA provided good separation of samples with 86% of the total variance accounted for the PC1. Clear clusterization between the sample groups was observed.
