Nowadays, the use of renewable energies has been progressively developed and one of them is wind energy. Wind energy can be transferred into various forms of mechanical dynamic movement that can be used to do work such as to turn the wind mill or wind turbine. Today, mostly in European countries, wind energy is mainly used to generate electricity which is integrated into National Grid system. The kinetic energy of the wind can be changed into other forms of energy, either mechanical or electrical energy. To convert the kinetic energy into electricity, a machine called wind turbines, which consists rotor blade to move, it transfers some of its energy to the rotor. Then the rotor transfers its mechanical, rotational energy to the shaft, where it is connected to the center of the rotor before enters an electrical generator on the other end. The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of improving wind energy capture, under low wind speed conditions using vertical multiple blades wind turbine. This paper reports the first part of this study which is the development of the methodology using physical tests conducted and computer modeling using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. A wind turbine prototype had been designed and fabricated. Tests has been carried out on the wind turbine for the dfferent velocities of 4.8m/s, 5.5m/s and 6.6m/s and output data on the torque, rotational speed, acceleration time and maximum tip speed ratio for each set of blades were collected and analyzed. The Findings are then manipulated for designing an energy efficient vertical wind turbine for mini electrical power generation plant.
