Snakebite envenomation is a disease caused by the toxic effects of snake venom. Common symptoms are such as two puncture wounds, redness and swelling, and severepain around the wounds. Severe cases include death or permanent disabilities in victims who survive snakebite envenomation. Effective and accurate identification of the snakespecies from the snakebite is essential for a prompt administration of appropriate antivenom. However, venomous snake species are diverse and anti-venom products ortreatments often differ from species to species. Additionally, identification of the snake species is difficult even among doctors. Consequently, doctors have to resort to a “wait-and-see†approach in order to identify the symptoms caused by the snake bite. Unfortunately, this method is unreliable as the symptoms of snakebite envenomation may overlap with another snake species. Therefore, fast and accurate identification of snake species is essential to ensure the appropriate anti-venom and treatment are administered. Immunodiagnostic assay kit such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) may be used for the identification of snake venom. It is based on the interaction between antigen in the venom, antibody derived from an immunized host, and indicator solution for detection.
