Description
Pantiliners, compared to sanitary pad, are smaller and thinner pads which are used to absorb light menstrual or vaginal discharges. However, at times, the users raised questions about potential adverse health effects it might bring for frequent or prolonged uses. Users are concerned the pad might trap heat and moisture, promoting microbial growth. The public are also worried if its use can facilitate the migration of perianal microbes and lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs). Apart from UTIs, vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is another infection that cripple the female population. According to the Centre of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 75% of women will have at least one episode of VVC. In the market, there are sanitary pads or panty liners that come with antibacterial properties. However, the pad with antifungal activities is yet to be invented and marketed.
Highlights
Incorporation of natural products from a local plant, Mexican mint, into a panty liner to confer its antifungal activities to the pad. No antifungal pad so far in the market. The use of mexican mint, Plectranthus amboinicus (PA), in the pantyliners to prevent vaginal fungal infections is strongly supported by our in-vitro disk diffusion studies which demonstrated zone of inhibitions against C. albicans.
