The present invention relates to an amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (AEEG) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring device comprising: a fabric cap for fitting over a users head; and a plurality of electrodes distributed on the fabric cap; characterised by: each electrode of the plurality of electrodes comprising: a printed circuit board provided with a circuit; a sensing plate; an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC); a microcontroller; and a power supply; a near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) probe located on the fabric cap; and a wireless communication module located on the fabric cap and functionally connected to the plurality of electrodes. The monitoring device of the present invention is particularly well suited for use in infants, especially preterm neonates.
