Production of sago flour in Sarawak releases high content of waste which is disposed directly into rivers causing water pollution. In our technical plant design, we proposed proper treatment of sago waste i.e., sago hampas and Sago Mill Effluent (SME). Sago hampas from sago production can be converted to useful animal feed due to high content of carbohydrate while SME can be treated and utilised to produce biogas and bioflocculant. Sago hampas undergoes dewatering and drying process before packaged for animal feed distributions. SME on the other hand undergoes anaerobic digestion by methanogenic bacteria to produce biogas. The remaining SME undergoes aerobic treatment by bioflocculant producing bacteria to produce bioflocculant. The treated SME is later polished further by phytoremediation process before discharged into river. This is a concept of process design for zero discharge of sago waste and is believed can be applied in real application.
